Phil Spencer Reaffirms Xbox's Support for Switch 2, Praises Nintendo Partnership
Following the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, it's clear that the partnership between Nintendo and Xbox is set to flourish. Microsoft's head of gaming, Phil Spencer, recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Switch platform, highlighting its value in reaching gamers who aren't typically part of the Xbox or PC communities.
In an insightful interview with Variety, Spencer was questioned about specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. He emphasized that just as Xbox has supported the original Switch, the company is eager to extend its support to the Switch 2. "Nintendo has been a great partner. We think it is a unique way for us to reach players who aren’t PC players, who aren’t players on Xbox," Spencer stated. He underscored the importance of growing the Xbox community and nurturing the love for their franchises across diverse platforms.
Spencer expressed his admiration for Nintendo's role in the gaming industry, emphasizing the mutual benefits of their collaboration. "I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them," he added. "And getting the support from them for our franchises, I think, is an important part of our future."
Previously, Spencer has praised Nintendo's innovative approach, particularly during the initial teaser of the Switch 2. He also confirmed Xbox's strategy to expand the availability of its games across various platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles.
When asked by Variety if the Switch 2's reveal made him eager to announce Xbox's next console plans, Spencer remained focused on community and player engagement. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building," he responded, showing his inspiration from various creators and platform holders but maintaining confidence in Xbox's current roadmap.
Spencer reiterated Xbox's commitment to delivering games across as many platforms as possible, including cloud, PC, and consoles. Games like Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already made their way to Nintendo platforms, and it will be fascinating to see which Xbox titles will be available on the Switch 2 once it launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for an official debut on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders have not yet started, keep an eye on our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for the latest updates on when they might become available.
