Play Games in Portrait Mode with New Tate Mini Controller!
If you’re an avid gamer, chances are you've encountered the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone in a less-than-ideal setup. Enter the innovative solution from modder Max Kern: the Tate Mode mini controller. But the big question remains: does it truly address the challenges of vertical gaming?
Traditional gaming controllers are primarily designed for landscape mode, akin to what you'd use with a Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games require you to hold your phone in a portrait orientation, much like you would when scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern took it upon himself to devise a creative solution. He crafted a compact USB-C gamepad specifically tailored for portrait-mode gaming, often referred to as Tate mode. This gamepad directly connects to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.
Max utilized a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip for the Tate Mode mini controller and 3D-printed the case and buttons via JLCPCB. If you're interested in making one yourself, Max provides a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices. Its versatility is impressive, considering its small size.
However, there are concerns about the strain it might put on the USB-C port due to the gamepad supporting part of the phone’s weight. This could necessitate holding both the phone and the controller, potentially risking bending the connector over time.
Feedback on Reddit varies, with some expressing admiration for the innovation, while others worry about potential hand cramps and discomfort. It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but a DIY project. Max has shared the firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github, encouraging others to try it out.
