Pokémon TCG Pocket Gets Trading Today and Players Absolutely Hate It
Pokémon TCG Pocket's highly anticipated trading update has arrived, but instead of celebration, the player base is erupting in frustration. The trading mechanic, already criticized last week for its restrictions, has launched to an even worse reception due to unexpectedly high requirements.
Social media is ablaze with complaints about the sheer number of hoops players must jump through to trade. While the restrictions were previously announced, the excessive resource demands were cleverly veiled under the vague statement, "items must be consumed in order to trade."
Unlike simpler mechanics like Wonder Pick or booster pack openings, trading demands two distinct consumable items. First, players need Trade Stamina, which regenerates slowly or can be purchased with Poké Gold (real money).

The real controversy, however, centers around Trade Tokens. These are mandatory for trading any card of 3 Diamonds or higher. The cost is steep: 120 Tokens for a 3-Diamond card, 400 for a 1-Star card, and a whopping 500 for a 4-Diamond (ex Pokémon) card.
Trade Tokens are obtained by essentially selling cards. The exchange rates are heavily unfavorable: a 3-Diamond card yields 25 Tokens, a 1-Star card 100, a 4-Diamond card 125, a 2-Star card 300, a 3-Star immersive card 300, and a Crown gold card 1500. Lower rarity cards are worthless for trading purposes.
This system forces players into an absurd loop. For example, trading a single ex Pokémon requires selling five. Trading a single 1-Star card necessitates selling five 1-Star cards. Even selling a Crown card, the game's rarest, only provides enough Tokens for three ex Pokémon trades. Selling a 3-Star immersive art card—a key selling point of the game itself—doesn't even provide enough Tokens to trade a single 1-Star or 4-Diamond card.
'A Monumental Failure'
Reddit threads are overflowing with outrage. Posts like hurtbowler's (over 1,000 upvotes) declare the update an "insult" and a display of "excessive greed," prompting players to vow to quit spending money on the game. Comments echo the sentiment, calling the system "hilariously toxic," a "monumental failure," and a betrayal of the potential for a stronger community. The 15-second exchange time for Tokens further exacerbates the tedious process. Many users suggest renaming the game to reflect its apparent anti-trading stance.
Pay Day
The trading system is widely perceived as a blatant money grab. Pokémon TCG Pocket reportedly earned $200 million in its first month before trading was even implemented. The inability to easily trade high-rarity cards (2-Star and above) further fuels this suspicion. Players argue that readily accessible trading would eliminate the need to spend large sums on packs for a chance at obtaining specific cards. One player reports spending $1,500 to complete the first set alone.
Reddit user ACNL calls the system "predatory and downright greedy," highlighting the poor Token conversion rates and the lack of alternative acquisition methods. The requirement of three copies of a card before it can be sold for Tokens adds insult to injury.
Creatures Inc. Stays Quiet
Creatures Inc. remains silent amidst the firestorm, a rare move considering their previous response to initial concerns. Their previous statement, promising to gather feedback and improve the system, rings hollow in the face of the current backlash. IGN has reached out for comment, but a response is pending.
Some users suggest adding Trade Tokens as mission rewards, but it's more likely that Trade Stamina will be featured instead. Regardless, the poorly-received trading update casts a dark shadow on the upcoming Diamond and Pearl expansion, which will introduce popular Pokémon like Dialga and Palkia.
