Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet - Prismatic Evolutions: Era's Ultimate Crown Jewel Reviewed

The Pokémon TCG: Scarlet and Violet - Prismatic Evolutions set marks the peak of anticipation leading up to Pokémania 2025. Its immense popularity led to preorders selling out rapidly, and only now is stock beginning to replenish on shelves and online. Despite the challenges in obtaining this set, it has quickly become the crown jewel of the Scarlet and Violet series, featuring fan-favorite Eevee and its evolutions in breathtaking Special Illustration Rares and ultra-rare Master Ball foils.
This expansive set boasts over 200 cards, including heavy hitters like Roaring Moon ex and Pikachu ex. It combines stunning artwork with competitive viability, making it essential for both collectors and competitive players. Enhanced pull rates for Special Illustration Rares increase the chances of landing those dream cards, even as demand reaches unprecedented levels.
Yet, Prismatic Evolutions isn't just about the allure of beautiful cards; it introduces innovative mechanics like Budew's game-changing free attack and emphasizes rarity tiers to excite pack openers. Whether you're on the hunt for the Eeveelution family or seeking to build a tournament-ready deck, this set has something for everyone. It's not just another expansion; it's a defining moment for a generation of Pokémon TCG enthusiasts.
Personally, my experience with Prismatic Evolutions has been hit-or-miss. While this might not be the case for everyone, the mixed pulls can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it means that Special Illustration Rares and other rare cards are likely to retain their value. On the other hand, my 25 booster packs didn't yield the desired results. Let's delve into some of the exciting cards I managed to pull, and explore other rare additions to determine if Prismatic Evolutions truly lives up to the hype.
Glaceon ex (Surprise Box Promo Stamp) 026/131
Glaceon ex has the potential to be a formidable card by accumulating enough damage on an opponent's bench to knock out a Pokémon before it enters play. The challenge lies in managing multiple energies with Tera ex-cards. Nonetheless, witnessing a Glaceon Tera ex deck in action would be highly entertaining.
Eevee Elite Trainer Box Promo 173
Thanks to its stunning full artwork, this card is more likely to find a home in trainers' binders than in their decks. It's the standard Eevee card in this set, allowing for immediate evolution upon play, making Eeveelution deck construction much simpler.
Mela Trainer SAR 140/131
Mela is a potent trainer card that can be game-changing when used at the right moment. It allows trainers to retrieve a fire energy from their discard pile and draw up to six cards, making it especially valuable mid to late game. Though typically easy to pull, its Secret Art Rare (SAR) version is a collector's item.
Pikachu ex 028/131
Prismatic Evolutions also caters to those who missed out on Surging Sparks with Pikachu ex, though it's not a Tera ex. With its Thunder attack, it's a straightforward basic ex that can achieve one-hit knockouts in three turns, despite the high energy cost. Its one energy retreat cost makes it versatile for switching in and out from the bench.
Max Rod Ace Spec 116/131
This card has the potential to completely turn the tide of a battle. Imagine recovering Tyranitar ex and its four energy cards after a knockout, then rebuilding from the bench. It's one of the most impactful Ace Specs we've seen.
Espeon ex 034/131
Espeon ex decks are poised to be challenging to counter, thanks to their ability to discard from an opponent's hand and de-evolve all opposing Pokémon, shuffling the evolution cards back into their deck. A deck built around four of these cards could drag out battles and wear down opponents effectively.
Tyranitar ex 064/131
At first glance, Tyranitar ex's Grind attack seems promising. However, as a second-stage evolution requiring at least three energy cards to be effective, it falls short of expectations. While I'm a fan of Tyranitar, this ex-card doesn't quite meet the mark.
My Favorite Prismatic Evolution Cards
While everyone is eager to get their hands on the Eeveelution SIR cards, there are other remarkable artworks in this expansion that might be worth grabbing at a good price.
Dragapult ex SAR 165/131
Dragapult ex SAR 165/131 boasts one of my favorite artworks from this set, and I'm tempted to build a deck around Phantom Dive. With a two-energy cost for a combined 260 damage, 60 of which can be spread across the opponent's bench, it's a powerful move. Keep an eye on this card as its value may rise due to its desirability in decks.
Roaring Moon ex SIR 162/131
Another heavy hitter, Roaring Moon ex SIR, features stunning artwork. Its triple energy cost for attacks is steep, but as a basic Pokémon, it could be the game-changer in a tight battle. Building a deck around Stadium cards and supporting Roaring Moon ex sounds like an exciting challenge.
Umbreon ex SIR 161/131
While it's unlikely anyone will use a $1200+ Umbreon ex SIR in their deck, its impressive moveset is tempting. Like Roaring Moon ex, this card has the potential to turn the tide of a Pokémon TCG battle in the final moments. Despite requiring three different energy types, building an Eeveelution deck around Umbreon ex could be a fun endeavor.
So, is Prismatic Evolutions worth the hype? Absolutely. It offers a wealth of stunning cards for collectors and a variety of playable options for competitive players. However, securing stock might require some patience. Eeveelution-themed sets are always exciting, but the odds of pulling an elusive Eeveelution SIR are slim at 1 in 900 booster packs.
The addition of God packs and Master Ball cards adds an extra layer of excitement. Imagine pulling every SIR in one booster pack? While it's a rare occurrence, it's part of the thrill that keeps players opening packs and boxes.
Where to Buy Pokémon TCG: Prismatic Evolutions in 2025
Stock for Pokémon TCG: Prismatic Evolutions has been scarce, but it's slowly becoming more available. With Pokémon's popularity surging, driven by TCG Pocket, investor interest, and increased demand for sets like Surging Sparks, it's a challenging time to enter the hobby. The Pokémon Company is working diligently to restock shelves, making Prismatic Evolutions a pivotal set for both online and in-store purchases, steering clear of the secondary market.
