2023年，索尼推出了可外接的PS5光驱，作为数字版PS5的周边配件。然而，2024年PS5 Pro发布后，这款配件的需求量激增。由于PS5 Pro不包含光驱，想要升级硬件而不放弃光盘游戏的玩家，只能依赖这款外接光驱。
然而，自2024年11月PS5 Pro上市以来，由此产生的巨大需求导致光驱严重短缺，索尼自营的PS Direct网站难以维持供应。在英国等地区，黄牛囤积光驱，以高价转售，重现了2020年PS5首发时的场景。高昂的转售价格给玩家带来了巨大压力，毕竟PS5 Pro本身价格就不菲。
