2023年，索尼推出了可外接的PS5光驱，作为数字版PS5的周边配件。然而，2024年PS5 Pro发布后，这款配件的需求量激增。由于PS5 Pro不包含光驱，想要升级硬件而不放弃光盘游戏的玩家，只能依赖这款外接光驱。
然而，自2024年11月PS5 Pro上市以来，由此产生的巨大需求导致光驱严重短缺，索尼自营的PS Direct网站难以维持供应。在英国等地区，黄牛囤积光驱，以高价转售，重现了2020年PS5首发时的场景。高昂的转售价格给玩家带来了巨大压力，毕竟PS5 Pro本身价格就不菲。
目前看来，情况短期内难以改善。据PlayStation Lifestyle报道，截至发稿，PS5光驱短缺问题依然存在。美国和英国的PS Direct官网仍然缺货，少量到货的光驱很快就被抢购一空。一些第三方零售商，如百思买和塔吉特，也提供PS5光驱，但数量有限，难以满足众多玩家的需求。

正如前文所述，黄牛迅速抓住PS5光驱需求增长的机会，选择囤积光驱而非PS5 Pro主机本身。索尼方面至今未就持续的短缺问题发表评论，这令许多玩家感到不解，尤其是在2020年疫情期间，索尼努力维持PS5产能的背景下。
PS5 Pro内置光驱的缺失自9月份首次亮相以来就一直备受争议，因为从索尼官方渠道购买独立的PS5 Slim光驱需要额外支付约80美元。由于黄牛囤货导致价格上涨，许多PS5玩家别无选择，只能等待供应增加，需求下降——而这种情况似乎短期内不会出现。
