"Rare 25-Year-Old Space World GameCube Prototype Hits eBay for $100K"
The Nintendo GameCube, now approaching its 25th anniversary, continues to captivate a dedicated fanbase eager to collect its rarest editions. Among the most sought-after are the Panasonic Q, capable of playing DVDs—a feature absent in the standard GameCube—and unique variants like the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red console. However, the crown jewel of rarity is the 'Space World' GameCube, a prototype unveiled at the Nintendo Space World 2000 event. Believed to be lost until its rediscovery in 2023 by Donny Fillerup of ConsoleVariations, this prototype is a collector's dream.
The Space World GameCube stands out from its retail counterpart in several ways. Notably, it lacks functional hardware beyond a few LEDs designed to simulate operation. Physically, it features a semi-transparent black logo at the top, allowing visibility of the disc inside, and modified vents. According to ConsoleVariations, there are over 20 differences between this prototype and the original Japanese GameCube.

Currently, Donny Fillerup has put the Space World 2000 GameCube up for sale on eBay with a jaw-dropping price tag of $100,000. The seller's goal is to fund a gaming venue where enthusiasts can relive their youthful gaming experiences. Interestingly, the console is being sold without its accompanying controller, which also deviates significantly from the standard GameCube controller.
Fillerup is no stranger to selling rare gaming items, having previously auctioned off a Golden Wii, once gifted to the British Royal Family by THQ, for $36,000 in 2022. Given the historical significance of the Space World GameCube, is it unreasonable to expect it might fetch $100,000? While the asking price is high, Fillerup is open to negotiations, suggesting the possibility of a lower final sale price for those with deep pockets and a passion for gaming history.
