Scalebound Development: A Potential Comeback?
Scalebound was once hailed as one of the most ambitious action projects, blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a unique system for interacting with a colossal dragon companion. This game, announced in 2014, was poised to be a standout Xbox One exclusive, generating significant buzz. However, in a surprising turn of events, Microsoft officially terminated its development in 2017.
Recently, Clovers Inc's official X account posted a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. In the video, Kamiya reminisced about the game's development with a sense of nostalgia and pride, despite its cancellation. He further amplified his sentiments by retweeting the video with the message, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!", directed at Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division. This plea suggests Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving the project, a desire he has expressed before, notably in early 2022 when he mentioned wanting to discuss the project's potential revival with Microsoft.
Speculation about Scalebound's return has been a recurring topic, with rumors intensifying in early 2023. At that time, various sources hinted at a possible reboot, though Microsoft has yet to make any official announcements. In an interview with the Japanese publication Game Watch, when asked about Scalebound, Phil Spencer offered a coy smile and said, "I have nothing to add at this time."
Even if Microsoft shows interest in reviving Scalebound, a swift return of the game is unlikely. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is engaged with his studio, Clovers Inc, working on a new installment of Okami. Should Xbox greenlight the project, Kamiya's involvement would only commence after completing his current commitments. Despite the passage of time, the continued interest and discussions around Scalebound offer hope that this long-awaited game might one day see the light of day.
