Sega Embraces Innovation with Century and Fighter Projects

Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) is tackling multiple large-scale projects simultaneously, a feat attributed to Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation. This bold approach is evident in the studio's upcoming slate, which includes a new IP and a Virtua Fighter revamp. Let's delve into the details.
Sega's Embrace of Risk and New IPs
RGG Studio, already busy with the next Like a Dragon title and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, recently unveiled two additional projects: Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, and a fresh Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster). These ambitious undertakings highlight Sega's confidence in RGG Studio and its commitment to exploring uncharted territory. This approach reflects a blend of trust and a proactive pursuit of novel ideas.
Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama credits Sega's acceptance of potential failure as a key factor. In an interview with Famitsu (translated by Automaton Media), Yokoyama highlighted Sega's departure from solely pursuing safe bets, suggesting this risk-taking is ingrained in the company's DNA. He cites the creation of Shenmue as an example, born from Sega's desire to experiment with the Virtua Fighter IP by exploring the "what if we made 'VF' into an RPG?" concept.
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter series. Original Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support for the new project, and the team, including producer Riichiro Yamada, is committed to delivering a high-quality, innovative experience.
Yamada emphasized the goal of creating something "cool and interesting" that appeals to both existing fans and newcomers. Yokoyama echoes this sentiment, expressing his anticipation for both titles' reception. The future looks bright for RGG Studio, fueled by Sega's bold and innovative approach to game development.
