Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled

Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter installment, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative inactivity. The development reins are held by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the acclaimed Yakuza series.

The recently released in-engine footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, offers a glimpse into the game's visual style. While not actual gameplay, the meticulously choreographed combat sequence showcases a significant departure from the franchise's polygonal roots. The visuals aim for a realistic aesthetic, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new attire that deviates from his traditional look.

The last major Virtua Fighter release was the 2021 Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown remaster (coming to Steam in January 2025), preceding this entirely new entry. Beyond the stylistic shift, details remain scarce, though Sega's commitment to the project is evident, as highlighted by President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic announcement: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The game's director, Riichirou Yamada, has previously hinted at the intended direction, adding to the anticipation surrounding this fresh chapter in the fighting game legend.
