Details about the movie remain largely under wraps, but we do know it's set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided some insight into its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.

In the same conversation, Kennedy also clarified that Levy's film will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she noted. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film, adding another layer of excitement to the project.

Jonathan Tropper's comments suggest that progress is being made, though fans will need to exercise patience as the movie is slated for release no earlier than the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Since the release of the widely critiqued Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film.
