Sony Pulled GTA 6 Parody Game Grand Taking Ages From the PlayStation Store — but It’s Now Cleared for Release on Steam

The creators of the controversial Grand Theft Auto 6 parody, Grand Taking Ages, have successfully launched the game on Steam after its removal from the PlayStation Store. Initially released on PlayStation with AI-generated assets and a May 2025 release date, Sony swiftly removed the game. However, after significant revisions, Valve approved the game for Steam.

Key changes included removing the "VI" from the title, redesigning the logo, and updating descriptions to better distinguish the game from Rockstar's GTA 6. While the updated art still bears resemblance to GTA's style, it's a less direct imitation. The game continues to utilize AI for voiceovers, a fact disclosed on the Steam page in accordance with Valve's AI guidelines. The Steam page now features a new trailer and screenshots, emphasizing the parody aspect. The game's description reads: "Coming Soon Since Forever! Start your game dev journey in mom's garage! Battle angry fans, dodge ruthless journalists, and perfect the art of 'creative' deadlines. Survive on pizza and energy drinks while building your dream studio into... a slightly better garage!"

The developer, Violarte, employed a proactive strategy with Valve, engaging in discussions about the game's concept before submission. This contrasts with their approach to Sony. Violarte cites other GTA parodies, such as Grand Theft Hamlet, as precedent for the protection of parody under fair use. They have now submitted a request to Sony for reinstatement on the PlayStation Store, highlighting the successful Steam launch as evidence of the game's revised compliance.

The contrasting outcomes on PlayStation and Steam highlight the differing content moderation policies. Steam's more open approach is well-known, while Sony's stricter curation is under scrutiny following this incident. The increasing use of AI in game development, as seen in Grand Taking Ages, further complicates these platform policies. Rockstar's GTA 6 is still slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in Fall 2025.
