Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see the removal of 22 games from their library, including popular titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. These removals are scheduled to take effect on May 20, 2025.

PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service offered by Sony for its PlayStation platforms. This service provides a range of benefits to its members, including free monthly games, limited-time trials, access to online multiplayer, and exclusive discounts. Additionally, Extra and Premium members enjoy access to a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games.

As reported by Push Square, the upcoming removal of these 22 games will impact the PS Plus Premium library, notably with the departure of two significant first-party PS3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.

The removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 is particularly noteworthy because these titles are no longer available for purchase on the PlayStation Store. This means that once they are removed from the PS Plus Premium streaming service, they will only be playable on a working PS3 console with the physical copies of the games. These games were added to the PS Plus library at the end of 2024, making their removal less than a year later surprising.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, consists of alternate history first-person shooters. Following their work on the Ratchet and Clank series, Insomniac released three Resistance games for the PS3 before shifting focus to other projects such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles.

While Sony occasionally removes first-party titles from PlayStation Plus, the precedent was set with the unexpected removal of both Horizon games—Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West—in August 2024. However, those titles were still available for purchase when they were removed, unlike Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which will no longer be accessible on modern consoles after their departure from PS Plus.

It's interesting to note that Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, another first-party PS4 game, InFamous: Second Son, is also being removed from PS Plus.

The Resistance series has been inactive for some time. In February, Insomniac's founder and outgoing president, Ted Price, disclosed efforts to develop Resistance 4, but the project did not move forward. Similar to Guerrilla Games' Killzone series, Resistance has been sidelined.
