The story begins with protagonist Hazel and her mother preparing for a hurricane. After a heated argument, Hazel leaves home, only to witness their house being swept away by floodwaters. Driven by the need to find her mother, Hazel stumbles upon her true heritage, entering a fantastical realm inhabited by creatures from Southern folklore.

"Hazel begins to see fantastical phenomena all over Prospero, including meeting Catfish, an enormous – and talking – creature in his own right, stuck in a tree following the hurricane’s destruction," Lanier explained. Catfish reveals to Hazel that she is a Weaver, endowed with magical powers that allow her to perceive and manipulate the threads that weave the fabric of fate.

As Hazel explores this magical world, she must combat Haints, corrupted creatures that spread decay. By mastering her Weaving powers, Hazel can free these creatures from corruption and restore the environment to its natural state.
