Set to launch on September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man marks the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic’s Universes Beyond line, following Final Fantasy and the Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set from 2023. Unlike what you might expect, there won't be any preconstructed Commander decks. Instead, **the cards featured in the Scene Box above** are designed specifically for Commander and **will not** be Standard-legal.
While a Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and others served as Magic's initial foray into the Marvel universe last year, the Spider-Man set is the first to be fully inspired by the comics. According to Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall, a full set was necessary to truly capture the essence of Spider-Man and his extensive roster of villains.
"Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he’s come across over the years," McCall explains. "Including characters from the Spider-Man canon in a broader set would mean leaving too many on the cutting room floor. We might have managed to include Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-specific set, but there wouldn't have been room for Aunt May."
McCall notes that designing for a Universes Beyond set "flips the worldbuilding on its head." While typical Magic sets need to establish their setting and location while also being engaging to play, Universes Beyond sets can leverage the familiarity fans already have with iconic characters like Spider-Man. "When we create a card that embodies great power and great responsibility, we can incorporate more mechanical complexity because players understand the story the card tells. We don't have to simplify Universes Beyond cards; we just need to select moments that resonate, and fans will easily grasp them."
AnswerSee ResultsWhen it comes to translating these iconic moments and the world around them into a Magic set, Head Designer Mark Rosewater emphasizes that Magic’s color pie is versatile enough to represent heroism and villainy across all five colors. For example, he notes that Spider-Man aligns with white, blue, and green, though the version in the Scene Box is only white and blue.
"Spider-Man's sense of obligation to use his powers for good is fundamental to his inclusion in the white color pie. His origin from being bitten by a radioactive spider and his scientific prowess, such as creating his web-slingers, aligns him with blue. Additionally, Spider-Man's powers being animal-based and his connection to spiders and the Spider-Man universe fit into the green color pie."
"We're not limiting ourselves to any one [comic] run or series," McCall adds. Alongside the Scene Box, the set will include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all of which are showcased in the gallery above. While there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the set will bring back Welcome Decks—introductory decks usually distributed for free by game stores, offering new players an easy way to learn the game.
In addition to this year's Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast recently announced a set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Two more in-universe sets, Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities, are also on the horizon.
