Familiar yet Fresh

Ian Proulx, CEO of 1047 Games, shared their vision, stating, "Our goal is to create a game that can thrive for a decade or more." Building on the original's foundation, inspired by classic arena shooters, the team aimed to "craft a modern game with lasting appeal through a deep and engaging gameplay loop."

Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, elaborated on their innovative approach, saying, "We've reimagined our portal mechanics to cater to both Portal Gods and casual players alike, ensuring everyone can enjoy the game without needing to master portal usage."

While specifics about Splitgate 2's gameplay remain under wraps, it's confirmed that the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5, remain free-to-play, and introduce a "faction system." Though it retains familiar elements, "Splitgate 2 promises to offer a completely fresh experience from the original."

Often described as "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter that lets players create wormholes to navigate maps swiftly.

The original game gained traction after founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian released a demo, which attracted around 600,000 downloads within a month. Its immense popularity necessitated server upgrades to handle the influx of players.

After a period in early access, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. The studio then announced they would halt updates to focus on "creating the game fans truly deserve," hinting at a revolutionary sequel.

New Characters, Maps, Factions

The trailer introduces the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions designed to enrich the gameplay experience.

According to the game's Steam page, each faction offers a unique playstyle: joining Aeros lets you "dash around the battlefield," while Meridian allows you to "control chaos with tactical and time-manipulating abilities." Alternatively, go all-out with "Sabrask’s raw power."

Although details on how these factions will impact gameplay are scarce, it's clear that "Splitgate 2 is not aiming to be a hero shooter" like Overwatch or Valorant.

Fans eager for gameplay insights will have to wait until Gamescom 2024, held from August 21 to 25. However, the trailer promises "an authentic preview of what players will experience in Splitgate 2." The developers assured fans, "The maps, weapons, and portal effects you see are all genuine. And yes, we've reintroduced dual wielding, a nod to Halo's iconic feature."
