Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's ambitious open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Despite initially positive reviews upon its August 2024 release, player reception has been mixed, particularly concerning combat and stealth mechanics. These criticisms, while addressed in subsequent updates, haven't significantly boosted sales.

The game's underperformance has negatively impacted Ubisoft's financial results, falling short of projected sales targets. This shortfall, coupled with a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price following the game's launch, has raised concerns about the company's future. While Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment remain hopeful about the potential of planned DLC, recent reports paint a concerning picture.

According to VGC and industry analyst Christopher Dring, Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Although precise sales figures remain undisclosed, Jedi: Survivor's stronger performance highlights Outlaws' struggles to gain traction. Further evidence of this underperformance is Outlaws' ranking as the 47th best-selling game in Europe for 2024.

Jedi: Survivor's Success Factors

Several factors contribute to Jedi: Survivor's success. As a sequel to the popular Fallen Order, it benefited from established brand recognition and positive critical acclaim upon its April 2023 release. A later update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One further fueled its popularity.

In contrast, Outlaws has struggled to capture a large audience, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The first DLC, "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, launched in November 2024. A second expansion, "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune," featuring Hondo Ohnaka, is slated for Spring 2025. Whether these additions will be enough to revitalize Outlaws' sales remains to be seen.
