Switch 2 Features New Controller Functions

New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The eagerly awaited Switch 2 introduces innovative features to its joy-con, notably including mouse support. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released a patent publication from Nintendo detailing the joy-con for the Switch 2.

This publication sheds light on the new controller's capabilities, emphasizing its mouse-like functionality. The concept of the joy-con featuring mouse capabilities emerged following the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showcased the controller being dragged across a flat surface, hinting at its potential use as a mouse.

The patent essentially confirms the rumors surrounding the new joy-con, as Nintendo has remained largely silent on specifics about the Switch 2.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The joy-con for the Switch 2 retains the detachable design of the original Nintendo Switch, allowing both joy-cons to be separated from the console's main body. A standout feature highlighted in the patent is the joy-con's ability to function as a mouse.

According to the publication, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

Additionally, the joy-cons can be charged using a new dock that accommodates up to two joy-cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment connects the joy-con to the console and includes a wrist strap, reminiscent of the original joy-con design.

The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers resembling a standard controller split in half, each equipped with an optical sensor on the side, capable of functioning as a mouse. There's also an attachment that can combine these controllers into a standard controller.

It's important to note that the features outlined in the patent may not reflect the final product for the Switch 2, as Nintendo has yet to make official announcements regarding the joy-con's functions or any related attachments or devices.

Nintendo Direct For Switch 2

Nintendo of America announced via Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025, the schedule for the upcoming Nintendo Direct, which will delve into details about the Switch 2. The event is set to air on April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT and 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo social media platforms.

The Switch 2 trailer confirmed that the console will launch in 2025, though a specific release date has not been announced. For more information about the console, visit our dedicated Switch 2 page.
