Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics ($49.99)

For 90s fans of Marvel, Capcom, and fighting games, Capcom's Marvel-based fighters were a dream. Beginning with the excellent X-Men: Children of the Atom, the series consistently improved, expanding to the wider Marvel universe with Marvel Super Heroes, then the groundbreaking Marvel/ Street Fighter crossovers, culminating in the iconic Marvel vs. Capcom and the phenomenal Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics encompasses this era, adding Capcom's Punisher beat 'em up for good measure. A truly fantastic collection of classic titles.

This compilation shares many features with the Capcom Fighting Collection, including – unfortunately – a single shared save state across all seven games. This is particularly frustrating with the inclusion of a beat 'em up, where independent save progress is desirable. However, the collection otherwise delivers as expected: extensive visual filters and gameplay options, a wealth of art and a music player, and rollback online multiplayer. New to this collection is NAOMI hardware emulation, expertly implemented, resulting in a superb Marvel vs. Capcom 2 experience.

While not a criticism, I wish some home console versions were included. The PlayStation EX versions of the tag-team games offer unique differences, and the Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 boasts enjoyable extras ideal for solo play. Including Capcom's two Super NES Marvel titles, despite their imperfections, would have also been a welcome addition. However, the collection accurately reflects its "Arcade Classics" title, unlike some other compilations.

Marvel and fighting game enthusiasts will be thrilled with this exceptional collection. The games are outstanding, meticulously preserved, and complemented by a comprehensive range of extras and options. The single shared save state is a significant drawback, but otherwise, this is a near-perfect compilation. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is another must-have from Capcom, and performs exceptionally well on the Switch.

Yars Rising ($29.99)

Initially skeptical, given my fondness for Yars' Revenge and WayForward's announced Metroidvania take starring a young hacker codenamed Yar, I approached this with caution. The concept seemed odd. However, it's a good game. WayForward delivers solid visuals, sound, gameplay, and level design. Boss battles, typical of WayForward, are somewhat protracted, but not game-breaking.

WayForward commendably bridges the gap between this game and its single-screen shooter predecessor. Yars' Revenge style sequences are frequent, abilities evoke the original, and the lore is surprisingly well-integrated. The connection feels tenuous, but Atari's efforts to expand its classic library are understandable. The game feels divided between two largely disparate audiences, which may not have been the optimal approach compared to a wholly original concept.

Despite conceptual debates, the game is undeniably enjoyable. It may not challenge genre leaders, but it's a satisfying Metroidvania experience for a weekend. Future installments could potentially solidify its identity.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland ($24.99)

My nostalgia for Rugrats is limited, despite childhood exposure. I knew the characters and theme song, but lacked deep attachment. Therefore, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland was an unknown quantity. Comparisons to Bonk were made, fitting Tommy's physique. The game's crisp visuals, initially awkward controls (adjustable thankfully), and Rugrats theme song were immediate observations. Reptar coin collection, simple puzzles, and enemies established a standard platformer formula with exploration elements.

The ability to switch characters (Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil) revealed a Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) inspired gameplay mechanic. Enemy manipulation and block-stacking mechanics, along with digging elements (Phil's specialty), create a non-linear, vertically-focused experience. The boss battles are surprisingly engaging. The game also features selectable modern and 8-bit visuals and soundtracks, both effective. A filter is available, though not necessary.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland exceeded expectations. It's a high-quality platformer reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 2, with added elements. The Rugrats license is well-integrated, although voice acting in cutscenes would have been a welcome addition. While short and straightforward, it's worthwhile for platformer and Rugrats fans.
