Let's be honest about the story—it's a bit clichéd and not the main attraction of "Monster Hunter Wilds." Players don't flock to this series for its narrative, which here serves more as a tutorial than a compelling tale. The protagonist, who can now speak, doesn't add much to the experience, as the dialogues seem somewhat artificial, spanning across six in-game chapters.

The true allure of "Monster Hunter Wilds" lies in its intense and thrilling monster battles. Each encounter is unique, challenging, and deeply engaging. The protagonist, customizable as male or female, embarks on an expedition to explore uncharted lands. The expedition's purpose is to investigate the mysterious appearance of a child named Nata, found in the desert, suggesting that these supposedly uninhabited lands hold secrets yet to be discovered.
Nata is the sole survivor of his tribe, which was attacked by a creature dubbed the "White Ghost." The game attempts to weave a dramatic narrative around these events, though it often borders on the absurd, particularly with the local inhabitants' surprise at the protagonist's use of weapons.

While the story has become more structured and detailed, it remains secondary to the gameplay. "Monster Hunter Wilds" sometimes restricts player freedom, adhering to a linear script that can feel tiresome after around ten hours of play. The campaign lasts approximately 15-20 hours, and for those primarily interested in hunting, the story might seem more like a hurdle than a highlight. Thankfully, most dialogues and cutscenes can be skipped, a feature I greatly appreciate.

Hunting mechanics in "Wilds" have been streamlined. When you strike a monster, wounds appear on its body, which can be exploited for massive damage, causing parts to drop that are automatically collected—a practical and commendable change by the developers. Additionally, new rideable pets, called Seikrets, enhance the gameplay by automatically navigating to your hunting target or any map location at top speed. If knocked down, you can call your Seikret to swiftly pick you up, preventing further damage and allowing you to recover and strategize.

The automatic navigation of Seikrets is a significant time-saver, eliminating the need to constantly check the map. Fast travel to camps is also conveniently suggested when you hover over the tent icon on the map.

Monsters in "Wilds" no longer have visible health bars, requiring players to interpret their movements, animations, and sounds to assess damage taken. Your Seikret will even alert you to the monster's condition. Moreover, monsters employ new strategies, utilizing the environment during battles, and some can form packs, leading to multi-enemy encounters. In such scenarios, you can summon help from other players or NPCs, making the hunt more enjoyable and efficient.

For those seeking a greater challenge, mods are available to enhance the game's difficulty.
