T-1000 Gameplay in Mortal Kombat 1 Echoes Terminator 2, Surprise Kameo DLC Revealed

NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat 1, has unveiled exciting new content with the release of the first gameplay footage for the T-1000, a DLC guest character, and the announcement of Madam Bo as a new DLC Kameo fighter.
The T-1000's gameplay footage evokes nostalgic memories of Terminator 2, showcasing iconic attacks like the character's blade and hook arms. These moves bear a resemblance to those of Mortal Kombat's Baraka and Kabal. A particularly striking moment in the footage shows the T-1000 transforming into a liquid metal blob, performing an uppercut reminiscent of Glacius from Killer Instinct.
The T-1000 is voiced and modeled after Robert Patrick, who portrayed the character in the 1991 film. In the teaser, we hear Patrick's voice for the first time as the T-1000 engages in a battle with Johnny Cage. The footage concludes with a detailed look at one of the T-1000's Fatalities, which recreates the thrilling truck chase scene from Terminator 2, ending with the T-1000 emerging from the vehicle to deliver a fatal barrage of bullets to Cage.
Surprisingly, NetherRealm also announced that Madam Bo will join Mortal Kombat 1 as a DLC Kameo fighter simultaneously with the T-1000. Known from the base story of Mortal Kombat 1, Madam Bo is a beloved character—a skilled elderly restaurant owner who bravely defends herself against Smoke and his henchmen before Raiden and Kung Lao intervene.Madam Bo's gameplay is briefly showcased in the teaser, appearing fleetingly during the T-1000 and Johnny Cage confrontation, and later when the T-1000 calls her in for assistance.
The T-1000 will be available in Mortal Kombat 1 starting March 18 during the early access period for Khaos Reigns owners, with a wider release for purchase on March 25. Madam Bo will be accessible on March 18 as a free content update for Khaos Reigns owners or as a standalone purchase.
As the final DLC character in the Khaos Reigns expansion, the T-1000 follows other notable fighters such as Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. There's ongoing speculation among fans about whether NetherRealm will introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3, influenced by questions surrounding Mortal Kombat 1's sales performance.
Despite these uncertainties, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, remains committed to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav announced plans to focus on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them.
Madam Bo is set to enhance the roster of Mortal Kombat 1 as a Kameo fighter. In September, Mortal Kombat development chief Ed Boon revealed that NetherRealm had decided on its next project three years ago but assured continued support for Mortal Kombat 1.
Many fans anticipate the next title to be a third installment in NetherRealm's DC fighting game series, Injustice, although no official confirmation has been made by NetherRealm or Warner Bros. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. After releasing Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, it was expected that NetherRealm would alternate between the two franchises. However, they opted to release Mortal Kombat 1, a soft reboot, in 2023.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Ed Boon discussed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game instead of an Injustice title. He cited multiple factors, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine—from Unreal Engine 3 used in Mortal Kombat 11 to Unreal Engine 4 in Mortal Kombat 1.
Boon emphasized the team's commitment to safety during the pandemic and their desire to leverage the new graphics engine. Despite these changes, Boon reassured fans that the door remains open for future Injustice games, stating, "Not at all," when asked if the franchise was closed off.
