Chinese tech giant Tencent has recently acquired a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This move has significant implications for both companies, as detailed below.

Tencent Takes 37% Stake In Kuro Games

Tencent has increased its stake in Kuro Games by acquiring an additional 37% of the shares, bringing its total ownership to 51.4%. This acquisition has led to the exit of two other shareholders, positioning Tencent as the sole external shareholder of Kuro Games. The tech conglomerate first invested in Kuro Games in 2023, marking a significant expansion in its portfolio.

Despite the majority stake, an insider at Kuro Games, as reported by the Chinese news site Youxi Putao, has stated that the company will maintain its independence. This operational model is similar to Tencent's approach with Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends and Valorant, and Supercell, known for Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars. Kuro Games has emphasized that this change will foster a "more stable external environment" and support its long-term strategy for independence. As of now, Tencent has not issued an official statement on the acquisition.

Kuro Games, a prominent Chinese game development studio, is renowned for its action RPG Punishing: Gray Raven and the recently released open-world adventure RPG Wuthering Waves.
