Tom Hardy Demands More Stunt Oscars for Venom Role
Following the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' landmark decision to introduce an Oscar for Stunt Design, actor Tom Hardy has raised concerns about the category's limited scope.
In an interview with IGN ahead of his new film Havoc, Hardy expressed cautious optimism: "A single Oscar category feels like a long overdue starting point. While it's certainly progress, I believe the recognition should extend further."
The Venom and Mad Max: Fury Road star elaborated on the complexity of stunt work: "Stunt design merely scratches the surface - it's an umbrella term for dozens of specialized disciplines that deserve acknowledgment. From equestrian work to precision driving, fire stunts to high falls, underwater sequences to fight choreography - each requires unique expertise and carries significant risk."
"These artists are the unseen architects of cinematic thrills," Hardy continued. "They risk their wellbeing daily to create the spectacle audiences crave. Having collaborated with countless stunt professionals throughout my career, I'd strongly advocate for additional subcategories to properly honor their diverse skillsets."
Hardy's perspective found support from Havoc director Gareth Evans, renowned for his groundbreaking action sequences in The Raid films.
"Specialized categories would be welcome," Evans noted, "though artistic expression should remain the primary motivation. This recognition has been a century overdue - stunts have always been cinema's unsung heroes, and it's baffling why they've waited until the Oscars' centenary to receive their due."
While the Stunt Design award won't debut until the 2028 Academy Awards, audiences can experience Hardy's latest action performance much sooner. Havoc premieres April 25th on Netflix, offering a showcase of the very stunt work currently sparking these important industry conversations.
