Townsfolk, Short Circuit Studios’ serene 4X strategy, once centered on peaceful coexistence—mostly—with your neighbors. But with multiplayer now live, a new era of conflict arrives via Townsfolk’s 1v1 Conquest Mode, transforming how the game is played.

As the name suggests, the biggest shift is the introduction of combat. You’ll now build barracks, recruit soldiers, and deploy them to defend—or expand—your borders through force against other factions. It’s a dramatic departure from the quiet, diplomatic pace of the past.

Either way, you’ll soon experience more multiplayer-focused expansions from Short Circuit Studios. For now, the first iteration of the Conflict mode pits you against an AI opponent, but soon you’ll face off against friends in classic 4X style.

This pivot toward traditional 4X strategy and warfare may not appeal to everyone. But I believe it was inevitable—and a testament to Townsfolk’s growing popularity. It’s sure to attract players eager for the “exterminate” side of the 4X formula, especially now that it’s expanding to PC.
