Valve Unleashes Team Fortress 2 Code: Modders Celebrate

May 16,25(11 months ago)

Valve has just unveiled a significant update to the Source SDK, now including the complete client and server game code for Team Fortress 2. This exciting update empowers players to craft entirely new games from the ground up using the source code. Unlike modifications through the Steam Workshop or local content mods, this update provides modders with unparalleled freedom to alter, expand, and even completely rewrite Team Fortress 2 in almost any conceivable manner.

However, Valve has stipulated that any creations developed using this SDK cannot be sold. This means that all mods and spin-off content must be released for free on a non-commercial basis. Despite this, modders have the opportunity to publish their creations on the Steam Store, where they will appear as new games in the Steam game list.

Valve emphasized the importance of the TF2 community's contributions, stating, "Players have a lot of investment in their TF2 inventories, and Steam Workshop contributors have created a lot of that content. The majority of items in the game now are thanks to the hard work of the TF2 community." They urge mod makers to respect this connection and avoid creating mods that aim to profit from the efforts of Workshop contributors. Valve also expressed hope that many mods would continue to support access to players' TF2 inventories, where appropriate.

In addition to the Source SDK update, Valve announced a comprehensive update to all its multiplayer back-catalog Source engine titles. This update includes 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other enhancements for games such as Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life: Deathmatch: Source.

This announcement comes on the heels of the long-awaited seventh and final update to The Team Fortress 2 comic, released back in December after a seven-year hiatus. These comics have not only provided fans with new insights into their beloved characters and narratives but also underscored Valve's ongoing dedication to one of its most cherished series.
