Vincent D'Onofrio: Wilson Fisk's Movie Absence Due to Rights Issues

May 05,25(3 months ago)

It seems that fans of the notorious Hell's Kitchen villain, Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, may have to temper their expectations for seeing him on the big screen. In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, D’Onofrio shed light on the complexities surrounding his character's use in the Marvel universe. "The only thing I know is not positive," he stated, explaining that due to intricate ownership rights, his portrayal of Fisk is restricted to television shows only. This means no standalone Wilson Fisk movie is on the horizon, and it's uncertain if this situation will ever change.

This revelation likely dashes hopes of seeing D’Onofrio's Fisk in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. It also raises questions about the feasibility of a potential Charlie Cox Daredevil movie, where Fisk's presence as a villain would be expected. The intricacies of rights and ownership seem to be a significant barrier to expanding Fisk's narrative beyond the small screen.

D’Onofrio first brought Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, to life in the 2015 Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil. Over three seasons and nearly 40 episodes until its conclusion in 2018, his performance garnered widespread acclaim from both fans and critics. D’Onofrio's dedication to the character is evident in his thoughtful approach to Fisk's portrayal, drawing inspiration from iconic performances by actors like Harrison Ford. In a recent interview with IGN, he discussed how the humility and nervousness displayed by these actors in action scenes influenced his own multifaceted depiction of Fisk. He cited Gary Cooper's role in Sergeant York as an example of how humility can enhance the realism of action sequences.

Currently, fans can catch D’Onofrio reprising his role in Daredevil: Born Again, which is airing weekly on Disney+ and is set to conclude its first season on April 15, 2025. While the big screen may be off-limits for now, D’Onofrio's compelling performance continues to captivate audiences on television.
