CD Projekt Red is setting a new standard for NPC development in The Witcher 4, aiming to address previous criticisms of character depth in their earlier titles. Following feedback on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, the developers are committed to creating a truly immersive and believable world.

Game director Sebastian Kalemba outlined their ambitious goal: “We have a rule: every NPC should look like they are living their own life with their own story.” This philosophy is evident in the first trailer, showcasing the secluded village of Stromford. Villagers here adhere to unique superstitions, worshipping a forest god. One scene depicts a girl praying in the forest, her ritual interrupted by Ciri's arrival to battle a monster.

The developers are striving for unparalleled realism, focusing on detailed appearances, expressive faces, and believable behaviors. Kalemba stated, “We aim to make NPCs as realistic as possible - from appearance to facial expressions and behavior. This will create an even deeper immersion than before. We're really trying to set a new bar for quality.”

Each village and its inhabitants will boast distinct characteristics and narratives, reflecting the cultural nuances and superstitions of isolated communities. The Witcher 4, slated for release in 2025, promises a significant evolution in world and character creation, leaving fans eagerly anticipating further revelations.
