Yoshi-P Threatens Legal Action Over 'Stalking' Mod in Final Fantasy 14

In early 2025, a Final Fantasy 14 mod named "Playerscope" triggered widespread privacy concerns after reports surfaced that it could scrape hidden player data, such as character details, retainer information, and any alternate characters linked to a Square Enix account. This mod allows users to track specific player data of anyone nearby, sending this information to a centralized database managed by the mod author, regardless of whether the user is actively targeting a specific player or simply in proximity to others. The mod accesses sensitive information like "Content ID" and "Account ID," which can be used to track players across different characters, exploiting the Content ID system introduced in the Dawntrail expansion.
To avoid having their account data scraped by Playerscope, players must join a private Discord channel and opt out. This means that every Final Fantasy 14 player not in this channel is at risk of having their data collected, raising significant privacy concerns. Community feedback has been vocal, with one Reddit user stating, "the purpose is obvious, to stalk people."
The mod gained popularity after being discovered on Github, leading to its subsequent removal due to terms of service violations. Although it was mirrored on similar platforms like Gittea and Gitflic, IGN confirmed that the Playerscope repository no longer exists on these alternative sites. However, the mod could still be circulating within private communities.
In response, Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida issued a statement on the game's official forum, addressing the use of third-party mods like Playerscope. Yoshida confirmed the existence of tools that access undisclosed character information and manipulate internal account IDs to correlate data across different characters on the same service account. He emphasized that the development and operations teams are aware of the issue and are considering options such as requesting the tool's removal and pursuing legal action. Yoshida also clarified that while the mod cannot access personal information like addresses or payment details, the use of third-party tools is prohibited by the Final Fantasy 14 User Agreement, and the team is committed to maintaining a safe environment for players.
Despite the prohibition, tools like Advanced Combat Tracker are commonly used by the raiding community and referenced on platforms like FFlogs. Yoshida's threat of legal action marks a significant escalation in addressing the issue.
The Final Fantasy 14 community has reacted strongly to Yoshida's statement. One user pointed out the lack of plans to fix the game to prevent such mods, while another suggested that the game's developers should focus on preventing information exposure at the client side. A third user expressed disappointment, noting that the statement fails to address the root cause of the problem.
The author of Playerscope has not yet responded to these developments.
