A domino set contains gaming tiles known by various names: bones, cards, tiles, or stones. The standard set includes 28 rectangular tiles divided by a central line, with each half showing spots or remaining blank. Like playing cards, dominoes support multiple game variations. Extended sets (Double-9, Double-12) enable games like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Regional favorites include England's Muggins, Scandinavia's Bergen, Mexico's Mexican Train, and Spain's Matador.
Dominoes trace back to China's Song Dynasty, reaching 18th-century Italy before evolving into modern versions.
Basic Domino Rules:
Blocking Game
The standard two-player version uses a double-six set. Players draw seven tiles from 28 shuffled pieces. Tiles stand edgewise for privacy. Gameplay starts with strategic tile placement - in Muggins with the highest double (6-6), Bergen with 0-0, Mexican Train with descending doubles each round. Players alternately match numbers until someone plays their last tile or a stalemate occurs.
Scoring Game
Points accumulate for specific plays or emptying hands. Muggins rewards multiples of five at layout ends. Bergen scores matching open ends. Forget calling "domino" before placing a tile? You'll draw an extra piece. Mexican Train values the double-zero at 50 points.
Draw Game
This variation allows drawing extra tiles before playing. Scoring counts losing player's pips plus leftovers (minimum two tiles remain). Commonly called simply "dominos".
