Players & Cards

Tong-Its is designed for three players using a standard 52-card Anglo-American deck (no jokers). Card ranks in each suit are: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King. Aces are worth 1 point, Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth 10 points each, and number cards are worth their face value.

Objective

The goal is to form sets and runs by drawing and discarding cards, all while keeping the total point value of your unmatched cards as low as possible.

A run is made of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, like ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J. Note that an Ace-King-Queen sequence is not valid since Aces are low in this game.

A set consists of three or four cards of the same rank, such as ♥7, ♣7, ♦7. Each card can only be part of one combination—you cannot reuse the same card in both a set and a run.

The Deal

The first dealer is randomly selected. After that, the winner of the previous hand becomes the new dealer. Cards are dealt one at a time counterclockwise, beginning with the dealer: the dealer receives 13 cards and the other players get 12 each. The leftover cards form the stock pile, placed face down.

The Play

Each turn involves these steps:

Draw Start your turn by taking one card from either the stock pile or the top of the discard pile, then add it to your hand. You may only pick from the discard pile if you can immediately use it in a meld (a set or run), and you must show that meld.

Exposing Melds If you hold valid melds (sets or runs), you may reveal them on the table. Meld exposure is optional when drawing from the stock—you don't have to show a meld just because you can. Note that melds kept in your hand don't count against you later. To "open" your hand, you must place at least one meld on the table. A special rule: if you have a set of four without drawing from the discard to complete it, you can place it face down. This lets you open without revealing the cards or losing the bonus for a secret four-of-a-kind.

Laying off (sapaw) This optional move allows you to add cards to existing melds—yours or another player's. You can lay off multiple cards in one turn. Laying off is allowed even if your hand isn't open. Placing a card on another player's exposed meld blocks them from calling Draw on their next turn.

Discard End your turn by discarding one card from your hand, placing it face up on the discard pile.
