Gordang Batak

Gordang Sambilan is a traditional art form of the Mandailing Batak people. "Gordang" means drum, and "Sambilan" means nine. The Gordang Sambilan consists of nine drums, each with distinct lengths and diameters that produce different pitches. Typically played by six musicians, the arrangement is as follows: the smallest drums, numbers 1 and 2, serve as the 'taba-taba'; drum 3 is the 'tepe-tepe'; drum 4, the 'kudong-kudong'; drum 5, the 'kudong-kudong nabalik'; drum 6, the 'pasilion'; and drums 7, 8, and 9 function as the 'jangat'. Historically reserved for sacred ceremonies, the Gordang Sambilan is now frequently performed at weddings, guest receptions, and major public celebrations, reflecting evolving social customs. As a valued part of Indonesia's cultural heritage, the Gordang Sambilan has even been played at the presidential palace. [2]
