FBC: Firebreak - The Unexpected Multiplayer FPS Hit

When Remedy Entertainment, renowned for its exceptional single-player, third-person narratives, announced a multiplayer spin-off from their acclaimed 2019 Game of the Year, *Control*, skepticism was understandable. However, after witnessing a hands-off demo of *FBC: Firebreak*, a three-player PvE first-person multiplayer shooter set six years after the events of *Control*, my doubts evaporated. *Firebreak* stands out as a refreshingly original and delightfully weird addition to the crowded landscape of online shooters. It sidesteps the typical military and sci-fi themes, offering a unique experience without demanding the intense commitment often required by its peers. As game director Mike Kayatta emphasized, "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job." This philosophy is a breath of fresh air in today's gaming world.

*FBC: Firebreak* is designed as a three-player co-op FPS that promises a no-nonsense approach to gameplay. Whether you have 20 minutes or a few hours, the game accommodates your schedule with Perk unlocks and new character combinations that keep the experience fresh. Set in The Oldest House, players take on the role of volunteer first responders, using an array of bizarre weaponry. These characters, drawn from everyday occupations like secretaries and rangers, are the unsung heroes of the Federal Bureau of Control, stepping up when things go awry.

Upon logging into *FBC: Firebreak*, players select a Job (mission), a Crisis Kit (loadout), and set the Threat Level (difficulty) and Clearance Level, which dictates the number of zones to navigate. These zones, separated by containment doors, lead to different stages of the Job. In the demo, the Job was "Paper Chase," set in a seemingly mundane office section of the FBC building, where players must combat the spreading Hiss. The challenge lies in balancing the search for currency to upgrade and purchase new gear with the need to escape safely.

What sets *FBC: Firebreak* apart is its arsenal of uniquely crafted weapons. From a hand-cranked snowball launcher that can extinguish fires and douse sticky-note monsters to a zapper that can unleash lightning storms, the weaponry has a charmingly homebrew feel. Even traditional weapons like machine guns and shotguns are essential, particularly for dealing with the sticky-note monsters after they've been soaked or zapped.

The game's objective in "Paper Chase" is to eliminate all sticky notes before they overrun the building, culminating in a battle against a gigantic sticky-note monster reminiscent of Spider-Man 3's Sandman, but made of Post-It notes. Beyond the quirky weapons, *FBC: Firebreak* introduces engaging in-universe mechanics, such as office supply shelves for ammo refills, makeshift turrets, stereo speakers to repel the Hiss, and rinse stations to remove aggressive sticky notes. Unlockable Perks add further depth, with effects like bullets returning to the clip upon missing or extinguishing oneself by jumping up and down. These Perks can be enhanced or shared with teammates when multiples are acquired.

*FBC: Firebreak* is flexible in its player count, supporting solo, duo, and trio play. Remedy aims for a lower minimum PC spec while also supporting advanced features like DLSS4, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. The game will be Steam Deck verified and available on Xbox and PC Game Pass, PlayStation Plus Extra, and Premium from day one. While a post-launch content plan remains under wraps, paid cosmetics will be the only microtransactions.

While I haven't yet played *FBC: Firebreak*, the game's unique approach and design certainly pass the eye test. It's clear that this is no ordinary multiplayer shooter, and its commitment to a flexible, enjoyable experience without the need for extensive time investment is a welcome return to a more relaxed style of gaming.
