在他的YouTube视频系列中，樱井政博解释说，《任天堂明星大乱斗》的名称源于游戏系列的核心概念：“朋友们解决一些小争端”。据樱井政博透露，已故的前任任天堂社长岩田聪也参与了《任天堂明星大乱斗》名称的确定。

“岩田先生也参与了‘任天堂明星大乱斗’这个名字的构思。我们团队成员提出了一系列可能的名称和词语，”樱井政博在视频中详细介绍道。随后，他们与《地球冒险》系列的创造者糸井重里先生举行了一次会议，最终确定了游戏系列的名称。樱井政博补充道：“岩田先生是选择‘兄弟’这个词的人。他的理由是，即使这些角色根本就不是兄弟，使用这个词也增添了一种意味，那就是他们并非只是在战斗——他们是一群朋友，正在解决一些小争端！”

除了《任天堂明星大乱斗》的命名由来外，樱井政博还分享了他初次与岩田聪相遇的经历以及其他对这位前任任天堂社长的美好回忆。据樱井政博回忆，岩田聪亲自帮助编写了《任天堂明星大乱斗》原型的代码，当时这款游戏被称为任天堂64上的《龙王：格斗游戏》。
