Bioware Veterans Say Nightingale Too Open, Focus on Story
Inflexion Games, the studio behind the crafting survival game Nightingale, is implementing substantial changes based on player feedback and the developers' own assessment. Read on for details on the upcoming update and the studio's vision for the game's future.
Former Mass Effect Developers Address Nightingale's Shortcomings
Summer Update Promises Significant Improvements
In a recent YouTube video, Inflexion Games' Aaryn Flynn and Neil Thomson acknowledged *Nightingale*'s current issues, including player count and overall reception. They announced a major update slated for the end of summer aimed at rectifying these problems. The team is aiming to refine the core gameplay experience and better realize their initial vision. While quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes have been ongoing since the February early access launch (including the addition of offline mode), this update represents a more fundamental shift.
According to Thomson, the game's open-world design, while ambitious, has proven to be a double-edged sword. He described it as "almost too open world," lacking sufficient structure and clear progression. The update will address this by introducing clearer goals, improved progression indicators, and more distinct realm designs to combat the feeling of repetition.
Flynn emphasized the team's commitment to improvement, stating, "We do love the game very much, but we do think there's a lot of room to improve it." The update will also include increased build limits, allowing for larger and more complex player-created structures. Previews of this new content are expected in the coming weeks.
Despite currently holding "Mixed" reviews on Steam, Nightingale is seeing a rise in positive reviews, with approximately 68% of recent reviews being positive. The developers expressed appreciation for the community's feedback and support. Flynn concluded by stating that while more work remains, the team believes the upcoming update will significantly enhance the overall experience.
Game8's review of Nightingale echoed similar sentiments regarding the lack of guidance and overly complex crafting systems. For a more detailed analysis, check out our full review (link to be inserted here).
