A landmark partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) brings competitive chess to the EWC 2025, the world's largest gaming and esports festival. This collaboration aims to introduce the classic game to a wider, more mainstream audience.
EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement about its inclusion. He highlighted chess's enduring appeal and vibrant competitive scene as a perfect fit for the EWC's mission to unite global gaming communities.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader demographic. Carlsen stated, "This partnership is an incredible opportunity to grow the game, introducing chess to new audiences and inspiring the next generation of players."
Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown
The EWC 2025 will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, featuring a massive $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must excel in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a spot in the EWC, marking chess's inaugural esports appearance.
The CCT will feature a faster-paced format to attract esports fans, using a 10-minute time control per game with no increment, and an Armageddon tiebreaker.
With roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, chess's evolution across centuries has solidified its position as a globally popular pastime.
