Creator of Bloodborne 60fps Patch Says Sony Has Sent Him a DMCA Takedown — but Why Now?

Mar 21,25(1 years ago)

Lance McDonald, the creator of the popular Bloodborne 60fps patch, has reported receiving a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment. The notice demands the removal of all online links to the patch, which McDonald has complied with. He highlights the irony, referencing a past meeting with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida where he jokingly revealed his work on the mod, prompting laughter from Yoshida.

Bloodborne's continued absence from next-gen platforms remains a significant point of contention among fans. Despite its critical acclaim and commercial success, Sony has yet to release an official 60fps patch, remaster, or sequel, leaving a considerable void. This void has been partially filled by community efforts, including McDonald's patch and recent advancements in PS4 emulation, such as the ShadPS4 emulator, which allows for a near-remastered 60fps experience on PC. This recent emulation breakthrough may have prompted Sony's more aggressive action. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment.

Shuhei Yoshida recently offered his perspective on Bloodborne's continued absence in an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He theorized that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's creator, deeply cherishes Bloodborne and is hesitant to allow anyone else to work on it, even for a simple update or remaster, due to his busy schedule and the game's success. Yoshida emphasized this was merely his personal theory, not a leak of confidential information.

Despite Miyazaki's frequent deflection of Bloodborne questions, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, he did acknowledge in February 2023 that the game would benefit from a release on more modern hardware. Thus, Bloodborne remains a dormant yet highly anticipated title nearly a decade after its initial release, leaving fans hopeful for future developments.
