A Measured Approach to Western Market Growth

Known for titles like Danganronpa and Zero Escape, Spike Chunsoft is carefully diversifying its portfolio. In a recent BitSummit Drift interview with AUTOMATON, CEO Yasuhiro Iizuka highlighted the studio's commitment to its core audience while exploring new genres.

Iizuka stated, "Our strength lies in content related to Japan's niche subcultures and anime. Adventure games have been our focus, but we aim to expand by incorporating other genres."

This expansion into the West will be gradual and deliberate. Iizuka clarified, "We won't drastically change our content. Venturing into FPS, fighting games, or solely publishing Western titles for Western audiences isn't our area of expertise."

While famous for its "anime-style" narrative games, Spike Chunsoft's experience extends beyond this niche. Past ventures include sports (Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games), fighting (Jump Force), and wrestling (Fire Pro Wrestling) games. They've also published popular Western titles in Japan, such as Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4), and the Witcher series.

Iizuka emphasizes fan satisfaction as paramount. "We cherish our fans," he said, aiming to create "a publisher where fans return repeatedly."

He promises to deliver "the games and products our fans love," but also teases "surprises to catch people off guard."

While specifics remain undisclosed, Iizuka's commitment to his fanbase is clear. "Our fans have supported us for years, and we won't betray that trust," he affirmed.
