Disney's Star Wars Horror Project Confirmed by Andor Showrunner

According to Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy, Disney is reportedly working on a secret Star Wars horror project. During a recent interview with Business Insider, Gilroy hinted at Lucasfilm's intriguing behind-the-scenes endeavors. When questioned about tackling a darker Star Wars project, he revealed that such a venture is already in development.

"They're doing that. I think they're doing that," Gilroy stated, confirming the existence of a Star Wars horror project. "I think that's in the works, yeah."

If these rumors hold true, fans could witness Star Wars delve into the Dark Side like never before. While the exact nature of the project remains a mystery—whether it will be a TV series, movie, or something else entirely—details on creative leadership are also scarce. It may be years before we uncover what Lucasfilm has in store, but Gilroy's comments suggest that someone at Disney is indeed exploring this thrilling avenue.

"The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe … you can do anything," Gilroy remarked, reflecting on his experience with Andor. "So, my hope is that the show connects, and then we can pass along the favor that we were given from 'Mandalorian,' and we can pass along a good healthy backwind to someone else who wants to do something else cool."

The concept of a no-holds-barred Star Wars horror movie has long been a dream for countless fans, including Mark Hamill. While the expansive Star Wars universe has primarily focused on the Skywalkers and their surrounding characters, there remains vast potential to explore its darker, more sinister aspects. Although some spinoffs have ventured into scarier territory, major projects typically aim to cater to a broad, family-friendly audience.

Andor stands out as one of the more mature and highly acclaimed Star Wars narratives. Its first season, released in 2022, not only made a significant impact but continues to be cherished by fans (we awarded it a 9/10 in our review).

Gilroy and the Andor team are set to end the anticipation with the premiere of the first three episodes of Andor Season 2 on April 22. For more insights, you can explore how Season 1's success paved the way for Season 2. As we await the arrival of these episodes later this month, take a look at our breakdown of upcoming Star Wars projects in 2025.
