Ex-PlayStation President's Take on Nintendo Switch 2: 'Expected More Disappointment'
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida recently shared his candid thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2's reveal during an interview with Easy Allies. His response was less than enthusiastic, highlighting a sense of disappointment in Nintendo's approach.
Yoshida expressed that the Switch 2's reveal sent a "mixed message" from Nintendo. He felt that the company might be losing its unique identity, which he believes is rooted in creating new, innovative experiences by designing hardware and games in tandem. Instead, the Switch 2, as anticipated, is essentially an improved version of the original Switch, featuring a larger screen, more powerful processor, higher resolution, 4K capabilities, and 120 fps. Yoshida noted that the reveal even started with a hardware-focused presentation, similar to other platforms.

He acknowledged that for those who exclusively game on Nintendo hardware, the Switch 2 is exciting as it allows them to play titles like Elden Ring, which were previously unavailable. However, for gamers who use other platforms, the reveal was less thrilling.
Yoshida pointed out that the showcase, watched by millions, primarily featured ports from past generations rather than new, innovative titles. He singled out "Enter the Gungeon 2" as a standout, praising its announcement and the game's potential. He also commended "Drag x Drive" for embodying the essence of Nintendo's unique style.
Discussing the system's pricing, Yoshida noted the differences between Japan and the rest of the world, expressing disappointment that the Switch 2 did not live up to the high expectations set by fans hoping for something more groundbreaking.
Despite his reservations, Yoshida recognized the Switch 2 as a solid business decision, likely crafted by talented and intelligent designers. He acknowledged the system's technical improvements but lamented that it played it safe, possibly at the expense of the quirky, innovative spirit that many Nintendo fans cherish. However, he did note some new features like mouse controls that hint at Nintendo's playful nature.
While Yoshida delved into the pricing details during the interview, the actual cost of the Switch 2 in the U.S. remains undisclosed. Nintendo has paused North American pre-orders due to new tariffs announced on the same day as the system's reveal. With the global launch scheduled for June 5, time is running out for Nintendo to finalize these details before the release.
