Rockstar Games has postponed Grand Theft Auto VI's release to May 26, 2026, moving from its originally planned fall 2025 launch window.

In an official statement, Rockstar apologized for this substantial delay to what's anticipated to become the most significant entertainment release ever.

"We sincerely regret postponing your anticipated experience," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding GTA VI has been incredibly humbling for our entire studio. We appreciate your continued patience while we refine the game to perfection.

"Every Rockstar title aims to surpass player expectations, and GTA VI represents our most ambitious effort yet. We believe you'll recognize this additional development time as essential to delivering the quality experience our fans deserve.

"We're excited to share more updates with our community soon."

While Rockstar's announcement confirms GTA VI's official release date, fans shouldn't expect new footage as the wait continues for the second official trailer. Notably absent was any mention of launch platforms, fueling speculation about a potential simultaneous PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.

"Development timelines always carry inherent uncertainties, and definitive statements can sometimes prove premature," remarked Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive, during February discussions with IGN regarding the original 2025 timeframe. "That said, we remained confident about our projections."

In a May 2 investor communication, Zelnick expressed full support for Rockstar's decision to shift GTA VI into Take-Two's 2027 fiscal year.

"We wholeheartedly support Rockstar's decision to extend development for Grand Theft Auto VI. This revolutionary title demands additional time to fulfill its potential as a groundbreaking entertainment phenomenon.

"While we treat schedule adjustments seriously and recognize global anticipation for GTA VI, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. With our strong upcoming portfolio, we anticipate sustained business growth and increased shareholder value."

The revised GTA VI schedule reshapes the gaming landscape for late 2025. Major upcoming titles like Gearbox's Borderlands 4, EA's Battlefield revival, Bungie's Marathon, and Sony's Ghost of Yotei may benefit from reduced competition. Nintendo's Switch 2 launch strategy could also capitalize on this revised timing.

The delay presents challenges for developers who accelerated production to avoid GTA VI's initial late-2025 timeframe. Publishers scheduling major releases near May 2026 may now need to reconsider their launch strategies to accommodate Rockstar's juggernaut.
