"Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy Commander Decks Full of Fun, Surprising References"
Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling the exciting details of the upcoming Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy crossover set to launch this summer. Over the weekend, a substantial reveal of cards from both the main set and the Commander decks thrilled fans, who have been delighted by the creative nods to their beloved Final Fantasy games.
The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy offers a dual approach: a traditional Commander format and a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast array of cards to explore. The main set encompasses the entire mainline Final Fantasy series, from Final Fantasy 1 through to Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks zoom in on four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, with Commanders Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola respectively.

During last Saturday's Magic: The Gathering panel at PAX East, several cards were showcased that illustrated the journeys of key characters from their respective games. For example, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil features a mechanic that reflects his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The summons in Final Fantasy are brought to life through a "Saga Creature" setup, creating powerful yet temporary allies on the battlefield, cleverly merging the worlds of Magic and Final Fantasy.
Noteworthy cards include Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, with iconic artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura. The card's design captures Sephiroth's evolution through various forms within the Final Fantasy 7 universe, culminating in his ultimate form as Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

No Final Fantasy would be complete without the iconic Cids. This set includes a Cid from each numbered Final Fantasy game, with a special nod to the older Cid from Final Fantasy XV rather than his daughter, Cindy.

Following the panel, Wizards of the Coast released the decklists for the four Commander decks, sparking enthusiastic discussions among fans about how the team managed to encapsulate the essence of Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14 within the Magic framework.
Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly intertwine with Final Fantasy lore. For instance, Skullclamp features art inspired by the Jenova project from Final Fantasy 7, while Together, Forever evokes the emotional depth of Final Fantasy 10's narrative, touching on the protagonists' poignant journey through a devastated world. Be aware, however, that some cards may include story spoilers from the respective games.

On a lighter note, the set includes playful moments from Final Fantasy 10, such as the iconic and often memed moment captured in the Inspiring Call card.

Wizards has skillfully woven in humor and light-hearted scenes from Final Fantasy. Clever Concealment pays homage to the Wall Market scene from Final Fantasy 7, featuring Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in disguise, while Secret Rendezvous showcases four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene, each with a unique date: Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

Fans have been quick to notice the meticulous details that pay homage to the source material. The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, is rich with references to the critically acclaimed MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card mirrors the character's quirky habit of disappearing and reappearing, and the Archaeomancer's Map card draws from a real location in a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.
Final Fantasy 14 players have embraced the cards with enthusiasm, sharing playful takes on familiar elements. Jokes about the "This is Thancred" meme and alternative flavor text for the Rite of Replication card, which celebrates a famous speech from A Realm Reborn, have been circulating. The Tome of Legends card even replicates the Wondrous Tails book from the game, complete with the familiar missed connections.
Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

The attention to detail in these cards has certainly piqued my interest in seeing the full set. While the Commander decks have received much love, other reveals like Commune With Beavers from Saturday's panel have me excited to see how other Final Fantasy games are integrated into the broader Magic set.
Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy set is set to release on June 13, 2025, with a pre-release weekend scheduled one week earlier.
