Minecraft's appeal was never rooted in its visual presentation. With its boundless sandbox environment and limitless customization options, Mojang's iconic pixelated art style was always secondary to the core experience.

Today marks a significant shift with the launch of Minecraft's long-awaited Vibrant Visuals update, available on PC and a range of compatible consoles and smartphones. However, not every platform will benefit from this enhancement, and the classic Minecraft: Java Edition will also miss out.

For those playing the primary Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, or select Android and iOS devices, Vibrant Visuals is now accessible as part of the broader Chase the Skies update.

Chase the Skies introduces ridable Happy Ghasts to the overworld, offering a friendlier alternative to their hostile Nether counterparts that unleash fireballs. Players can now link camels together with leashes to form resource-carrying caravans and locate friends more efficiently using the new Player Locator HUD bar.

If you're playing on an older console like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, or using an older Android phone, you’ll need to manually enable the Vibrant Visuals option in the video settings menu. Mojang cautions that "performance on these devices may be affected."

For PC and smartphone users, the following technical specifications are required:

• Android: Adreno 640, Mali-G68, Mali-G77, or Xclipse 530 or higher

• iOS: A12 or M1 chip or higher

• PC: Minecraft running on DX12

Vibrant Visuals does not currently support splitscreen multiplayer, custom Worlds, or Texture Packs.

As for Nintendo Switch—or the rumored Switch 2—today’s Vibrant Visuals announcement makes no mention of Nintendo’s platforms, leaving players uncertain about potential compatibility.

On a more positive note, Minecraft is now officially optimized for Xbox Series X/S, a milestone arriving approximately five years after Microsoft’s current-generation consoles debuted.

Vibrant Visuals fulfills Microsoft’s longstanding commitment to deliver a substantial graphical overhaul for Minecraft, a goal initially hinted at in 2017 with a impressive trailer for the since-canceled Super Duper Graphics Pack. Back then, Mojang targeted the upgrade for Xbox One and "Project Scorpio," which later became the Xbox One X. Now, a comparable visual enhancement has finally arrived.
