Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 VRR Exclusive to Handheld Mode
Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing with excitement after spotting references to variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which mysteriously vanished soon after. Now, Nintendo has stepped in to clarify the situation around VRR on the Switch 2.
In a statement to NintendoLife, the company confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only," they stated. "The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When asked about the possibility of VRR support in docked mode through a future firmware update, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."
This means that while the Switch 2 will feature VRR in handheld mode, those planning to use the console with a TV will not have access to this feature at launch. The clarification comes after weeks of confusion, sparked by the initial mention of VRR that was quickly retracted and gradually removed from various sites, as documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.
While this news may be disappointing for those eager to enjoy VRR on the Switch 2's TV settings right out of the gate, there's still hope for future updates. Sony, for instance, rolled out VRR support to PS5 consoles after launch, suggesting that Nintendo could follow a similar path.
In other developments, Nintendo has released a list of games set to receive free performance upgrades on the Switch 2, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has reassured fans that the company expects to have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
