The director of The Witcher 4 has clarified that recent video footage showcasing Ciri uses the same in-game model as seen in the initial reveal trailer, addressing fan concerns about perceived differences in her facial appearance.

Following the release of a behind-the-scenes video, fans noticed two short clips (at 2:11 and 5:47) featuring close-ups of Ciri. These close-ups sparked discussion, with some viewers noting subtle differences compared to her appearance in the cinematic reveal trailer. While some praised the new look, others echoed previous online commentary suggesting Ciri appeared "ugly" in the initial trailer.

This led to speculation that CD Projekt Red had altered Ciri's in-game model in response to this perceived backlash. However, The Witcher 4 game director Sebastian Kalemba took to social media to clarify the situation. He stated that the model remains unchanged, explaining the variations are due to the footage being "raw" and lacking the cinematic lighting, animation, and camera effects applied to the reveal trailer.

“The behind-the-scenes video features the same in-game model of Ciri as seen in the original trailer,” Kalemba stated. “What you’re seeing is raw footage — without facial animation, lighting, or virtual camera lenses. This variation is a natural part of the game development process. At this point, any character's appearance may vary depending on the medium.”

The Witcher 4, the first in a new trilogy, features Ciri as the protagonist instead of Geralt. Executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga previously explained to IGN that this was a natural progression, stating Ciri was “the very organic, logical choice” given her prominence in the books and the conclusion of Geralt’s story in The Witcher 3.

While acknowledging potential negative reactions to Ciri's leading role, both Mitręga and Kalemba emphasized that her selection was a deliberate and well-considered decision, stemming from discussions dating back nine years. They highlighted Ciri's compelling backstory and the numerous narrative opportunities her character presents.

Geralt's voice actor, Doug Cockle, also expressed his enthusiasm for Ciri taking the lead, emphasizing the exciting narrative potential this shift offers.
