Xbox Fans to Expect More Movie and TV Adaptations, Says Phil Spencer
The less-than-stellar performance of the TV adaptation of Halo has not deterred Microsoft from exploring more adaptations of its video game franchises. According to Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Gaming, fans should anticipate further adaptations in the future. Spencer shared these insights with Variety ahead of the release of "A Minecraft Movie," a cinematic adaptation of the popular sandbox game Minecraft, which stars Jack Black. High expectations surround this film, and a successful launch could pave the way for sequels.
Microsoft's journey into adapting video games for screens has seen a mix of outcomes. The recent Prime Video series "Fallout" has been a resounding success, with a second season already in the works. In contrast, the TV adaptation of Halo, a flagship Xbox game, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception. Despite this, Spencer emphasized to Variety that Microsoft is learning and gaining confidence in this arena. "We're learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer stated, acknowledging that while some projects may not hit the mark, the overall experience is building their capabilities and enthusiasm.
Looking forward, speculation abounds about which Xbox game could be next in line for adaptation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated series based on "Gears of War," though progress has been quiet, aside from actor Dave Bautista's expressed interest in playing Marcus Fenix.
Upcoming New Video Game Movies and TV Shows: 2025 Release Dates and Beyond

Considering the success of "Fallout," Prime Video might explore adapting "The Elder Scrolls" or "Skyrim." However, with existing fantasy series like "The Rings of Power" and "The Wheel of Time," Amazon may feel sufficiently covered in the genre. Sony's "Gran Turismo" movie has surprisingly been successful, prompting speculation about a potential "Forza Horizon" film from Microsoft.
With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft now has a broader portfolio, including titles like "Call of Duty" and "Warcraft." Reporter Jason Schreier's book "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment" mentioned that series for "Warcraft," "Overwatch," and "Diablo" were in development with Netflix but did not proceed. Could Microsoft revive these projects?
On a lighter note, Microsoft's ownership of "Crash Bandicoot" could lead to a family-friendly animated series or movie, especially given the success of similar adaptations like "Mario" and "Sonic." Additionally, with "Fable" set for a reboot in 2026, an adaptation could be timely and exciting.
Finally, there's the possibility of Microsoft attempting another adaptation of Halo, this time as a big-budget movie.
Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further along in this arena. Sony has enjoyed success with "Uncharted," "The Last of Us," and even "Twisted Metal," which is getting a second season. Sony has also announced adaptations for "Helldivers 2," "Horizon Zero Dawn," and "Ghost of Tsushima," with "God of War" already confirmed for two seasons. Nintendo, meanwhile, boasts the most successful video game adaptation to date with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and is working on a sequel and a live-action "The Legend of Zelda."
