"New Console-Only Crossplay Option Penalizes Non-Cheating PC Players in Call of Duty"

With the arrival of Season 3, *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6* and *Warzone* are rolling out a major shift in matchmaking settings—one that’s sparked concern among PC players. Activision has officially separated Multiplayer Ranked Play from Warzone Ranked Play and introduced a dedicated Multiplayer Unranked setting for Quickplay, Featured, and Party Games. Each mode now offers three distinct crossplay options, available starting April 4:

  • On: Matches you with players across all platforms.
  • On (Consoles Only): Restricts matchmaking to console players only.
  • Off: Locks matchmaking to your current platform only.

Activision has clearly warned players: selecting On (Consoles Only) or Off may lead to longer queue times. But it’s the introduction of “console-only” crossplay in public matches that’s drawing criticism from the PC community.

Many PC players fear this change could isolate them further, especially since console players may opt out of crossplay to avoid perceived cheating risks. While cheating remains more prevalent on PC—as acknowledged by Activision itself—this update inadvertently penalizes legitimate PC players who play fairly. Some worry lobbies will take longer to fill, particularly in less-popular modes.

Reactions have been swift:

“As a PC player... hate this change but I get it,” said Reddit user exjr_. “I hope it doesn’t affect queue times long-term—or I’ll be forced to buy the game on PS5 just to enjoy it.”

“This is awful for PC players because this just killed PC,” tweeted @GKeepnclassy. “Terrible idea—now non-cheating PC players are being punished. This is bullshit.”

“My lobbies barely fill already due to SBMM,” added @CBBMack. “This will make it worse. Time to plug in the console, I guess.”

Critics argue Activision should double down on anti-cheat improvements rather than enabling players to avoid PC altogether. The company has invested heavily in this fight—shutting down high-profile cheat providers like Phantom Overlay in March and four others ahead of Verdansk’s highly anticipated return to *Warzone*. Still, many believe the battle against cheaters is ongoing and far from over.

That said, not all hope is lost. As content creator TheXclusiveAce points out, most casual console players likely won’t even notice these new settings. They typically jump into unranked matches without tweaking options—and will probably stick with default crossplay settings. In reality, it’s the minority who choose “console-only” who’ll face longer queues, not the broader PC community.

“PC players will still matchmake against the largest pool,” TheXclusiveAce explained. “Most players won’t know this setting exists. If anything, those opting for console-only are limiting themselves—that’s their choice now, and for many, it’s a fair tradeoff.”

As Season 3 launches, all eyes are on how these changes impact matchmaking—and whether Activision’s promised anti-cheat upgrades make a real difference, especially with Verdansk drawing in a fresh wave of *Warzone* players.
