DirectX 11 vs. DirectX 12: Which is Superior?

Navigating the choice between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 in modern games like *Ready or Not* can be daunting, especially if you're not tech-savvy. DirectX 12 might promise better performance, but DirectX 11 offers stability. So, which should you opt for?

DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, Explained

In simple terms, both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 act as intermediaries, enabling your computer to communicate with games. They assist your GPU in rendering the game's visuals and scenes.

DirectX 11, being older and simpler, is easier for developers to implement. However, it doesn't fully harness your CPU and GPU's potential, meaning it can't maximize your system's performance. Its widespread use stems from its ease and speed of implementation for developers.

In contrast, DirectX 12 is newer and more adept at utilizing CPU and GPU resources efficiently. It offers developers numerous optimization options, enhancing game performance. Yet, its complexity requires more effort from developers to fully leverage its capabilities.

Should You Use DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 for Ready or Not?

The decision hinges on your system's specifications. If you're equipped with a modern, high-end system featuring a graphics card with robust DirectX 12 support, opting for DirectX 12 could enhance your gameplay. It efficiently distributes workloads across multiple CPU cores, leading to improved frame rates, smoother gameplay, and sometimes even better graphics. This could mean fewer in-game deaths—or at least, that's the hope.

However, DirectX 12 may not be ideal for older systems, where it might do more harm than good. For older setups, DirectX 11 remains the safer, more stable choice. While DirectX 12 can boost performance, it may cause issues on older PCs.

In summary, if you have a modern system, DirectX 12 can better utilize your resources and enhance performance. For older systems, DirectX 11 is the more reliable and stable option.

How To Set Your Rendering Mode in Ready or Not

When launching *Ready or Not* on Steam, you'll be prompted to select your Rendering Mode—either DX11 or DX12. If you own a newer PC, choose DX12 for better performance. For an older PC, stick with DX11 for stability.

If this window doesn't appear, here's how to manually set it:

  • In your Steam Library, right-click on *Ready or Not* and select "Properties."
  • A new window will appear. Click on the "General" tab, and then the "Launch Options" drop-down menu.
  • From the drop-down menu, select your preferred Rendering Mode.

And that's how you choose between DX11 and DX12 for *Ready or Not*.
