The Nintendo Switch 2 is off to a strong launch, selling 3.5 million consoles. But aside from playing Mario Kart World, have you picked up many other games? And how many of those were not made by Nintendo?

Analysis of the console's first-week sales data reveals a mixed performance for non-Nintendo software. Naturally, Nintendo’s own games are the main draw on its hardware—roughly 80% of Switch 2 units sold so far were bundled with Mario Kart World.

In addition, Nintendo launched its new platform with the bite-sized tech demo and mini-game collection Nintendo Switch 2: Welcome Tour, along with enhanced editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, available for purchase or upgrade. And, of course, Switch 1 owners could continue playing their full existing libraries. With so many options from Nintendo itself, it's not shocking that third-party titles haven’t dominated sales.

In the UK, first-party titles accounted for 86% of physical Switch 2 game sales during launch week, including copies of Mario Kart World included in console bundles, according to NielsenIQ data reported by The Game Business. This figure is similar to the 89% first-party share seen during the Switch 1's launch week.

In the US, third-party publishers saw slightly better numbers, with first-party titles making up 62% of physical game sales in the first week, per Circana. Industry analyst Mat Piscatella noted that comparable figures for the Switch 1’s first month were above 80%.

The top-selling third-party game on the Switch 2 in its debut week was Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red. Meanwhile, Sega—which launched Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, Sonic x Shadow Generations, and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S—was the platform’s third-largest publisher during that period.

According to The Game Business, one unnamed third-party publisher described their Switch 2 launch sales as "below our lowest estimates," despite strong console hardware performance. It's a notable statement, but given the competition from Mario Kart World and the lack of pre-launch reviews for any Switch 2 games, these results may not be entirely surprising.

Another factor to consider is that the original Switch launched with only five physical games, while the Switch 2 had 13 available at launch—likely spreading consumer demand more thinly.

Ultimately, Piscatella noted that meaningful data on how the Switch 2 is performing for third-party publishers will emerge, but it’s still too early for definitive conclusions.

"It's far too soon to make sweeping claims—good or bad—about the Switch 2’s performance," Piscatella concluded. "Seriously, the console hasn't even been out for three weeks."
