Avowed Sequel/DLC Hinted At as Sales Numbers Satisfies Obsidian and Microsoft

Following Avowed's successful launch, its director hints at future plans for the franchise. This article explores the potential for expansions, sequels, and other Obsidian projects.
Avowed's Director Eyes Future Expansion of the World
Sequels and Expansions on the Horizon?

Microsoft and Obsidian are reportedly pleased with Avowed's sales performance. In a February 22, 2025 Bloomberg interview, Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the possibility of future expansions or a sequel. While Obsidian hasn't publicly announced any plans, Patel expressed strong interest in continuing the Avowed story, stating, "Having built this amazing world, and with the team's strengthened capabilities and experience, I'd love to explore it further."
Navigating Avowed's Development Challenges

Avowed's development journey wasn't without its hurdles. Patel described the process as "messy," detailing challenges stemming from Obsidian's near-sale in 2018 and subsequent acquisition by Microsoft in 2020. The project underwent a leadership change and reboot in January 2021. This involved streamlining features, including the removal of multiplayer functionality. Managing a large team of over 80 people presented significant leadership challenges. Patel's vision focused on strengthening the narrative, leveraging the lore of Pillars of Eternity, and shifting from an open world to open zones for improved development focus. She noted, "On every project, it's messy at first, then it all comes together."
Pillars of Eternity Tactics in the Works?

With Avowed reigniting interest in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity director Josh Sawyer confirmed internal interest in a tactics title, but acknowledged the need to define scope, visual quality, and overall scale. While Sawyer remains committed to developing Pillars of Eternity 3, he envisions a significantly larger budget—similar to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million investment—compared to Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
Avowed is available now on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for future updates!
