In a discussion with GamesIndustry.biz, leaders from Kepler Interactive, the publisher behind Clair Obscur developer Sandfall Interactive, shared insights into the game’s success and its industry impact. Matthew Handrahan, Kepler’s portfolio director, emphasized the game’s concise playtime as a key distinction from typical AAA blockbusters.

"Conciseness is a strength in gaming," Handrahan stated. "A shorter experience can be more impactful. Like in film, where many feel movies are overly long, gamers also want time for other priorities."

François Meurisse, Sandfall’s COO and producer, explained to GI.biz that the team aimed for Clair Obscur to deliver an "intense yet compact" experience from the start.

"Initial estimates pegged the main quest at around 20 hours," Meurisse said. "We landed closer to 30, or up to 40 if you explore more. As a gamer, I value the excitement and engagement a game offers over its duration."

According to HowLongToBeat, a main story playthrough of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 averages about 27 hours, with 41 hours for main story plus side content, and around 61.5 hours for a completionist run. While longer than some indie titles, it remains significantly shorter than many sprawling AAA games or extended RPGs.

Handrahan noted that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 "truly values the player’s time." He highlighted its lack of "unnecessary padding or bloated elements added just to extend playtime." Meurisse questioned whether a game’s length directly correlates with its value.

"A game’s worth isn’t tied to its duration," Meurisse said. "Take Inside, one of my favorite games—it’s about two hours long but delivers a polished, intense, and for some, transformative experience."
