As Dragon Age Fans Fear the Death of the Series, One Former BioWare Developer Offers Words of Reassurance: 'Dragon Age Isn't Dead Because It's Yours Now'

Following layoffs at BioWare impacting key Dragon Age: Dreadwolf developers, a former writer offered reassurance to fans, stating, "DA isn't dead because it's yours now."

EA's recent restructuring of BioWare prioritized Mass Effect 5, resulting in some Dragon Age: Dreadwolf team members transferring to other EA studios, while others faced layoffs. This followed EA's announcement of Dreadwolf's underperformance, reporting 1.5 million engaged players—significantly below projections. It's unclear if this figure represents unit sales or includes EA Play subscribers and trial users.

The combination of EA's announcement, BioWare's restructuring, and the layoffs fueled concerns within the Dragon Age community about the franchise's future. With no planned DLC for Dreadwolf and development concluding, the series' fate seemed uncertain.

However, Sheryl Chee, a senior writer on Dreadwolf who transitioned to Motive Studios to work on Iron Man, shared a message of hope on social media. Acknowledging the challenges faced by her team, she emphasized the enduring power of fan engagement. Quoting Camus, she highlighted the fans' role in sustaining the franchise through fanfiction, artwork, and community connections. She asserted that while EA/BioWare owns the IP, the core ideas behind Dragon Age remain with the fans. She concluded that fan creations, inspired by the series, prove its continued impact.

Dragon Age's history includes Dragon Age: Origins (2010), Dragon Age 2 (2011), and Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014). The latest installment, Dreadwolf, arrived after a decade-long gap. In contrast to Dreadwolf's reception, Mark Darrah, a former executive producer, revealed that Inquisition sold over 12 million copies, exceeding EA's internal projections.

While EA hasn't explicitly declared Dragon Age dead, the future of the series appears uncertain given BioWare's current focus on Mass Effect 5 and the significant changes within the studio. EA confirmed that a dedicated team at BioWare, led by veterans of the original Mass Effect trilogy, is developing Mass Effect 5. While specific numbers weren't disclosed, EA assured that the studio is adequately staffed for the project.
